*Tuesdays isn’t available as a half-day because our Science experiments can extend over the whole day.

What, no Fridays? Nope. We think Fridays are best enjoyed wandering in the woods, having picnics, making music, riding horses,  going to the cinema, skateboarding, peering into rock pools, trampolining, lazing in a field, making jam… What do your Fridays look like?

What are our classes like?

Take a sneak peek with this short video

Mondays

10-10:25am. Start the day gently with yoga or hang out with your friends in breakfast club. Then a short meditation followed by the check-in which gives everyone the opportunity to share how they are feeling and any news they may have.

10:25-11:20am. This class is an opportunity to study the chosen topic in the context of its effect on human beings and on their complex relationships with each other. It can include any combination of history, culture studies, geography, sociology, psychology and religious studies.

11:35-12:30pm. The students decide together which books to read and study. Many different books are proposed, everyone reads the first few pages and discuss each book together and then vote on which to continue reading.

11:35-12:30pm. Our ‘students decide’ sessions are an opportunity for students to study something different. They can develop individual projects or do something as a group. Students receive a budget and are supported to decide together what they want to learn about and, if necessary, to find qualified, experienced people to work with them.

1:55-2:50pm. What does it mean to feel well in our body and mind?  Wellness is a broad concept and in this lesson we attempt to explore what it means across the various dimensions of our lives including the emotional, physical and social.  We will examine the many interconnected aspects of wellness through discursive and somatic explorations.  We will consider how wellness looks in our own individual bodies and minds, as well as considering the bigger picture of community and planetary wellness.

1:55-2:50pm. The time we live in has been called both “The age of information” and “The age of mis-information”. Never has it been more important to learn how to critically read, explore and think about the condition of the world we live in and how we can make a change for the better!
We will choose together which issues affecting our world we want to learn about, and learn what can be done about them!

3:05-4pm. Young people need spaces to speak passionately and persuasively about important issues. They are supported to formulate opinions supported by logic and evidence.
Having confidence, knowledge of issues, and the ability to speak on the spot will help ensure that young voices are heard and that they will have influence in society.

3:05-4pm. Our cooking classes are often student-led, with plenty of support from the teacher. Ingredients lists are sent out the week before and often we get time to eat our delicious food together at the end of the class.  This class is a joint class (at the student’s request) with the 7-11yrs group.

3:05-4pm.  Visual Arts with our Mexico-City resident artist Verity. We’re inspired by the topic and each child is supported to find their unique expression. This class is a joint class (at the student’s request) with the 7-11yrs group.

We spend 3/4 of this day learning about Science. Sometimes we focus on one branch of Science for a whole day or a few weeks.

Wednesdays

I call Wednesday a ‘creative day’ because there is so much creativity going on. I think it is my favourite day.

10:25-11:20am.

Everyone has something unique to say and when encouraged to write about that, writing flows from even the most reticent writer. The students can write about whatever they like in the form of poems, stories, diary entries or articles. The class begins with an introduction exploring an aspect of storytelling, e.g. how to make readers laugh, how to build a character, plot construction, different genres of fiction…
Then the students write about something connected to this or not, it is their choice!

11:35-12:30pm. Students learn about different genres, composition, lighting, styles and techniques and are supported to find their own way. We also look learn about editing images and videos.  Feedback is always given on work handed in, and it is always positive and encouraging!

11:35-12:30pm. Following the interests of the students we explore costume creation, make up and set design. We explore, in a practical way, the various roles required in a dramatic production including performers, directors and those backstage.

1:55-4pm. This double session supports students to develop their techniques in painting, drawing, collage, sculpture & graphic design. Students are encouraged and supported to develop their individual style and interests.

1:55-4pm. In this double session we explore the joy of cooking for pleasure and student led discussions about emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.  Following the students’ food interests, our hands on cookery session allows us to develop a variety of food preparation techniques, have lots of fun whilst doing so and hopefully have something delicious to eat at the end! We use this as an opportunity to practise preparing, cooking and eating in a mindful way.   In the second part of the session, we have time to investigate the wellbeing topics that the students have chosen so they can really begin to gain an understanding of what it means to feel well in body and mind.
