Flexible learning. 

Students choose which days they wish to study with us. They can choose full days or half days.

(Tuesdays isn’t available as a half-day because our Science experiments can extend over the whole day).

Mondays

10-10:25am. Start the day gently with yoga and other fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to share how they are feeling and any news they may have. 

10:25-11:20am. We will “fly” to Spain and Latin America to discover fascinating cultures and countries. We will focus on Spanish as a living vibrant language, learning to communicate, laugh and sing in Spanish.
My background: I am a qualified Spanish-language teacher. I speak 5 and a half languages and lived in 4 different countries (Monica).

11:35-12:30pm. This class is an opportunity to study the chosen topic in the context of its effect on human beings and on their complex relationships with each other. It can include any combination of history, culture studies, geography, sociology, psychology and religious studies.

1:30-1:55pm. We come back together after lunch with gentle, fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to come back together and have a chat before getting back to work. 

1:55-2:50pm. In this class we are going to be entrepreneurs! We will decide on an initiative we want to do – and we will actually do it! On the way we will learn important practical skills, manage a budget and interview experts.
My background with this: I am no great businessman myself, but I have initiated many social projects, such as a mini-music festival, a summer camp, an alternative shop, webinars and a tour of a theatre company (Nimrod).

3:05-4pm. The time we live in has been called both “The age of information” and “The age of mis-information”. Never has it been more important to learn how to critically read, explore and think about the condition of the world we live in and how we can make a change for the better!
We will choose together which issues affecting our world we want to learn about, and learn what can be done about them!
My background with this: I am a peace activist from a war zone, a guest university lecturer in how to read media and have a degree in Education for Social Change (Nimrod).

Tuesdays

10-10:25am. Start the day gently with yoga and other fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to share how they are feeling and any news they may have. 

10:25-11:20am. Extend your Maths skills and learn everything you need to master numbers, geometry, algebra, and data… We make maths fun and effective with the our interactive tools.

11:35-12:30pm.

Chemistry: We learn about atoms, elements, and compounds, and how they interact in all of the exciting reactions that happen all around us every day. 

 

We spend 3/4 of this day learning about Science. This gives us ample time to dive deep into each subject and to conduct simple experiments together to learn practically.

1:30-1:55pm. We come back together after lunch with gentle, fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to come back together and have a chat before getting back to work. 

1:55-2:50pm. 

Biology: We learn about the wonders of the living world in this subject, from the amazing features of the human body to the complex relationships of organisms in their food webs.

3:05-4pm. 

Physics: We learn about energy, light, sound, and the forces that govern our world. 

 

We spend 3/4 of this day learning about Science. This gives us ample time to dive deep into each subject and to conduct simple experiments together to learn practically.

Wednesdays

10-10:25am. Start the day gently with yoga and other fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to share how they are feeling and any news they may have. 

10:25-11:20am. Students study different genres, composition, lighting and many styles and techniques and are supported to find their own way. We also look learn about editing images and videos. 

11:35-12:30pm. Everyone has something unique to say and when encouraged to write about that, writing flows from even the most reticent writer. The students can write about whatever they like in the form of poems, stories, diary entries or articles. The class begins with an introduction exploring an aspect of storytelling, e.g. how to make readers laugh, how to build a character, plot construction, different genres of fiction…
Then the students write about something connected to this or not, it is their choice! Feedback is always given on work handed in, and it is always positive and encouraging!

1:30-1:55pm. We come back together after lunch with gentle, fun exercises followed by a short meditation. The check-in gives everyone the opportunity to come back together and have a chat before getting back to work. 

1:55-2:50pm. This double session supports students to develop their techniques in painting, drawing, collage, sculpture & graphic design. Students are encouraged and supported to develop their individual style and interests.

Thursdays

10:25-11:20am. Extend your Maths skills and learn everything you need to master numbers, geometry, algebra, and data… We make maths fun and effective with the our interactive tools, maths building skills and quizzes. All this ensures great brain development in order to tackle our scientific investigations! 

11:35-12:30pm. A creative blend of all the sciences focussed around the termly student-elected topic. Take part in team activities, projects and learn something new about the wonderful world around you.

1:55-2:50pm. Humanities is a combination of history, geography, citizenship and cultural studies. This helps us to understand each chosen topic in the context of its effect on human beings and on their complex relationships with each other.

3:05-4pm. Our ‘students decide’ sessions are an opportunity for students to study something different. Students receive a budget and are supported to decide together what they want to learn about and, if necessary, to find qualified, experienced people to work with them. 

Fridays

10:25-11:20am. Improve your maths to discover how things work, to quicken your mind and to develop your analytical thinking. Take part in fun group games to grasp mathematical concepts.

11:35-12:30pm. The students decide together which books to study in Literature. They submit options, we read the first three pages together and then decide on a book to read over the following weeks. We pre-read pages at home and in class we discuss the themes, characters and events and connect to our own lives and the world we live in. A beautiful element of this class are the storied that students share about themselves that relate to the book we are reading.

* our homework is usually optional, however the reading at home is a necessary part of this class.

1:55-2:50pm. In this 2 hour workshop we’ll be creating a “passport to growing up”. The activities in this lesson will be documented for each student into their own metaphoric passport, with steps that helps us become more independent and understand ourselves.

Economic Wellbeing

  • Bills & finances (tracking responsibilities and planning for financial responsibilities)
    Value of money (what money is good for and not good for; who pays the price for my stuff?).
  • Budgeting (e.g. what I earn/spend).
  • Making good choices (investing in time vs money).
  • Dealing with bureaucracy.

Emotional Wellbeing

  • Rules for safe container (discussion with examples and group negotiation of terms).
  • Dealing with deep feelings.
  • Intuition.

Health/Physical Wellbeing

  • Body awareness & sovereignty.
  • Self-care.

Social Wellbeing

  • Friendship (what makes a good friend?).
  • Where I am socially (cards with symbols).
  • Family/roots project.
  • Reading social environments.
  • Internet safety (collectively bringing in and discussing real scenarios).

3:05-4pm. Our 2 hour workshop continues after the break. We’ll also include:

Conflict Resolution

  • Agreeing on principles ahead of time, doing some acting out with scenarios and then using it in real time week by week.

Cooking 

  • Preparing ingredients ahead of time.
  • Measuring out ingredients.
  • Seasoning
  • Approaches to experimenting/substituting.
  • Accommodating other’s needs (allergies, vegans).
  • Nutrition and balance in meals.

Sexual Health

  • Consent.
  • Different types of relationships.
  • Gender and sexual orientation
  • Changing bodies & experiencing puberty.

Self Awareness

  • Where do I come from? (personal history timeline).
  • Who am I?
  • Where do I want to go?
  • What does it mean to be “well”?

Democratic Meeting

The whole community is invited to participate in the weekly democratic meeting. 

This is currently held on Mondays 6-7pm
